What's going on in this malevolent household? In addition to a complex, multilayered plot that involves both contemporary and historical crimes, Hart's novel is rich in local color: evenings at the pub, the petty feuds and jealousies of the townspeople and the traditional music and folk culture of Ireland are evocatively rendered. Nora finds a filthy, dead crow on her bed, as well as broken glass littering her bathroom floor. Osborne's dour cousin, Lucy Osborne, is the housekeeper, and her son, 17-year-old Jeremy, who drinks too much, also lurks around the estate. 2005 by Erin Hart (Author) 93 ratings Book 2 of 4: Nora Gavin Hardcover £18.99 2 Used from £6. Cormac and Nora stay in the house of Hugh Osborne, the owner of a decaying manor who also happens to be the prime suspect in the unsolved disappearance of his wife and infant son two years ago. So begins Hart's debut thriller, which follows archeologist Cormac Maguire, maverick local detective Garret Devaney, and Nora Gavin, an American anatomist lecturing at Trinity College Medical School, as they investigate the farmer's grisly finding, which could date back quite far, given that peat bogs can preserve bodies for centuries. The story is fascinating, dipping into ancient times and rituals as well as old and new mysteries and secrets. Though Jennifer McMahon reads this darkly mysterious and gripping mystery primarily with an Irish brogue, she slides into Nora's distinctly American accent with ease. As in the previous novel, Nora and archeologist Cormac Maguire are thrown together and their relationship again factors into the story. Soon after Nora arrives a second corpse appears, this one killed more recently but with a cause of death that closely resembles the pagan ritual markings on the first body. The setting is a peat bog in Ireland and Nora is called in when a body buried long ago is discovered. Nora Gavin, American pathologist, stars again in this follow-up to Hart's Haunted Ground.
